The New Jersey Department ofinance held hearings on March 7th regarding a proposal to legalize sports gambling across the state. Sponsored by Assemblyman Ron Kimchi (D Dekalb), the bill would allow regulated gambling and would make changes to a number of existing laws including the definition of “bookie” and the prohibition against gaming in the state. Two main concerns raised were the prevalence of bookmakers, which are the individuals or businesses that place bets on a variety of events; and the possibility of allowing professional sports to promote events through the use of logos and advertisements. New Jersey legalized sports betting in 2021 but the lack of regulation has allowed individuals to wager illegally on games. The legislature hopes to address these issues in the upcoming session.
In Illinois, the state’s legislative process was slowed down by the National Collegiate Athletic Association or NCAA for months before the General Assembly reconvenes. This leaves the door wide open for an Illinois sports betting legalization bill. The Gophers are one of the favorites to win the NCAA title in football. The recent addition of the women’s basketball team from the University of Maryland brings more Illinoisans and sports lovers to watch their team play. This may be just the type of crowd that would support a move towards legalized sports gambling.
Although there is still time for the Illinois legislature to resolve this issue, it has become clear that legalizing sports gambling in the state will not happen anytime soon. There are too many questions surrounding the legality of such legislation. One of the most pressing concerns is the cost to Illinois taxpayers of having professional sport leagues monitor the system and set the guidelines that govern its operation.
