New York is the latest state to legalize online betting, and it’s a great time to try it out. As of Jan. 8, the State Gaming Commission announced the winners of mobile betting licenses in 2021. The four main operators are Bally’s, DraftKings NY, FanDuel NY, and the NYCFC of Major League Soccer. The YES Network and a few other smaller operators will be expanding their offerings in the near future.
The state has lost much of its potential revenue in sports betting to neighboring states like New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Nevada, as bettors from these states have moved outside of their borders. The lack of legal competition in New York has forced sportsbooks to turn to illegal offshore books, causing the state to lose millions of dollars in revenue. Fortunately, the state’s legislature voted in November to pass legislation that legalizes online sports betting.
With the popularity of mobile sports betting, New York sportsbooks are making a splash. In January, sportsbooks in the state made a combined $3.57 million in gross revenue. The Governor of New York recently declared his support for online sports betting, and even endorsed a single-source model run by the state lottery. This model has been heavily criticized in Washington D.C. and is believed to lead to higher prices for consumers.
Despite this, the state has also made significant strides in regulating online sports betting. A 2011 state bill passed by the New York legislature has legalized sports betting. Although the New York State government has yet to enact this legislation, it is likely that it will be implemented by April 2021. There’s also a plan to regulate mobile sports betting in the state. Hopefully, it won’t be as controversial as many had feared, as long as it’s legal and safe.
Currently, most US states have legalized online horse racing, and individual states are moving towards legalizing other forms of online betting. In 2011, the Department of Justice issued a legal opinion that said the Wire Act only applies to sports betting. Nevertheless, it remains illegal to operate an offshore sportsbook in the US. However, New York is one of the few countries to have fully legalized mobile sports betting in the United States. There are no federal laws that prohibit mobile betting in the state.
